The film tells the story of the national tragedy that occurred on January 20, 1990, the heroism of the captains of the Caspian Sea Oil Fleet, as well as the journalists and cameramen who filmed the events.

After only a few years of training, the top student at the fishing school is appointed captain of a fishing vessel. The experienced crew of the Orion - a bunch of old sea dogs - openly show their dislike for the new captain, a youngster with no experience. The conflict deepens as a result of the captain's "bad luck"—the ship is not catching fish even in places where it used to catch a lot. It is only when the captain discovers the cause, which is a malfunction of one of the devices, that he is fully rehabilitated in the eyes of the crew.

Orphaned Zdeňka Štěpánová helps her foster parents in Moravia at an inn. One day she learns that she is to be taken in by the owner of a toy factory, Miloš Kavan, who will fulfill her father's last wish. At the same time that Kavan and his housekeeper Mrs. Julie are expecting Zdeňka, their caretaker's little niece Hanička arrives. Mrs. Julie initially considers her her protégé, because she has no idea that Zdeňka is already a grown-up girl...

After 3 years in a relationship with her now indifferent but well-off boyfriend X, a young girl named Y is ready to call it quits. X reacts by proposing marriage to Y in 3 months time. She desperately wants to leave her mother's house and accepts X's proposal. The next day Y meets Z at her "while I get married elementary school" job. As Z naively begins to court Y, a steamy affair quickly develops between them. Y's emotionally and financially desperate double-nature manifests itself when she is unable to choose between X and Z. As the wedding day approaches, true love and monetary security clash in modern day Latin America.
